Argostoli -
Argostoli is the capital of Kefalonia and the island's main working city and port. It has an attractive main square (The Platia) with plenty of bars and tavernas in which to sit and watch the world go by. This area is a good place to visit in the evening if you want a bit of nightlife. The main street, Lithostroto is pedestrianised and has lots of shops. You will find chemists, banks and cash machines near to the main square. Assos - The tiny village of Assos enjous a senic and romantic setting next to an imposing Venetian fortress. The whole area is surrounded by beautiful coastal scenery of dramatic white rocks and cobalt sea with hilsides covered in forests of cypress and pine. Fiskardo - Fiskardo lies 54 km from Argostoli. It is a beautiful town with Venetian houses which are situated around the harbour. Part of Fiskardo's charm is being the only town in Kefalonia not to have been devastated by the earthquake in 1953. Fiskardo at night takes on an entirely different perspective. The lights, the old buildings, cafes, bars and restaurants all combine to provide a magical mediterranean atmosphere. Glass-Bottom Cruises - This is a very popular trip that all the family can enjoy, combining cruising, snorkelling, swimming and a delicious B.B.Q. lunch on the beach. An ideal day for all of those sun worshippers seeking relaxation whilst enjoying the Kefalonian scenery. Tickets available with most travel agents in Argostoli. Captain Corelli's Mandolin Sites - During the latter part of the 1990s, the island of Kefalonia gained a surge of new interest, since it was the setting for this now famous story, set during the Second World War. Due to the great success that the novel received, it was soon made into a blockbuster movie, and true to form, Kefalonia featured heavily in the film, with many scenic views, attractions and locations being chosen, particularly around Sami and Argostoli. In particular, Sami was used extensively, since its buildings are more historic. Fans of Captain Corelli's Mandolin often come to Kefalonia to search out the film locations alone. |
